R7D65 – Change Is Good, Variety Is Good, Ice Cream Is Good (thanks to Vitamix)

I can't help being out here

Last night while working out I felt a little restless as I often do when using P90X. It’s not that the workouts are boring, it’s more that I have a walkout basement onto a large deck which has all the evening sun you could wish for and the lure of the open air is too strong. So since it was Chest, Shoulders and Triceps day I figured I would improvise a little. First I substituted pike presses with some wallball shots. I have an improvised 26lb basketball o’ sand that I use for this and it’s a great sub for any shoulder exercise plus for me since I don’t do much leg specific work I like anything that I can get a little extra quad burn. Instead of the scarecrows I wanted to be adventurous so I did wallball shots without the shot, instead I pressed the ball up with one arm so that I ended up with my arm fully extended switching the ball from hand to hand each time I came up from squat. It doesn’t sound hard, and it’s not that taxing but the balance component takes some skill. Rather than do pour flys I decided to do 5 clean and press, 5 one arm swings and 5 snatches per arm for a total of 15 reps per side. Doing all  3 movements one after the other was an unusual feeling and worked just fine. Last of all, instead of the fly/row/press which I have to admit I actually like doing I took the previous set one step further and did all 15 movements with one arm then repeated again on the other side doing the set twice. It was fun to switch things up a bit and also to improvise what I was doing on the spur of the moment. I think that I need to improve my library of kettlebell skills though, I need some funky moves to throw into my workouts. All in all, the workout was pretty good and I got to hang out on the deck in the sun while working out which just makes me more jealous of people in California and Australia who have weather like that all year round…

I then made my own ice cream. I know, some paleo people say dairy is bad but I really don’t eat any cheese or drink milk alone any more so I threw some Costco frozen fruit and a cup of cream and a tablespoon of honey into the World’s Best Blender and made some delicious ice cream. If you want a blender that will blow your mind and make you ice cream go get a Vitamix from Costco.

I’m also a tumblr now, although I can’t get the wordpress plugin to autopost yet, I am working on it.

R7D54-59 – Weekend Away, Injuries And Reviews

Let’s start at the beginning.

Friday was Max Recovery since I had made a discovery that I had never actually done an Insanity recovery workout. It wasn’t too tough, although less of a challenge than I expected and the next day I was sore which tells me that I am not stretching enough during my regular workouts. Saturday we headed out to Niagara Falls and the weekend looked like this:

Friday – Max recovery
Saturday – RKC in the room
Sunday – Off
Monday – RKC on the deck (injury?)
Tuesday – Chest and Back

The workout on Saturday was brief but tough, it was only 30 minutes but I did 34543 ladder with some swings and some snatches thrown in to make up for the lack of chinups. Saturday night we went out to the Casino after a Keg dinner that was tasty but pricey. Sunday was spent on the jet boat tour and in the casino with an amazing dinner at Copacabana Brazilian Steakhouse  to follow. We all ate way too much but the food was pretty spectacular. Each time a guy came around with a huge spear of meat it was simply impossible to say no. After 90 minutes of hedonistic meat gorging we wandered back to the hotel and I for one passed out in a meat coma. Monday we drove back to Toronto and spent the day relaxing without the baby which was really odd and tough to get used to. I did a RKC workout on the deck that looked like this:

With 45lb KB

3 rungs with chinups
10 wallball shots
4 rungs with chinups
20 swings
5 rungs with chinups
10 wallball shots
4 rungs with chinups
20 swings
3 rungs with chinups with 70lb KB
20 swings with 70lb KB

At the time I felt pretty good, I had a pretty high workload I thought and I felt fine. In fact, according to Firstbeat, it was the toughest workout I have done with the exception of the day I ran almost 5k in 40 degree heat just to see if my new foot pod worked. The next day however I was very sore, in fact, my body was out of alignment like it is when I have a nerve impingement which made me think that maybe I was going to need another week off. I decided I should work out anyway, taking it easy during my Chest and Back workout and to my relief, my post workout stretch proved tight but also a huge relief. By the end of the day my back was fine and I was back on track.

So what of the reviews?

The Keg – Niagara Falls, Ontario

It’s lobster summer which usually means an attempt to cover their insanely overpriced meals by adding lobster and giving them fancy names. However, nothing, even lobster, is going to soothe the sting of paying $45 for a plate of middle of the road restaurant food. The restaurant was packed, but we were seated quickly and our waitress was very attentive, friendly and happy to get 50% of our order right. Actually to be fair, she did put in the order correctly we can only assume that the kitchen messed up the thing. 2 of our 4 dinners were correct, but Nicole got a salad with no dressing (although she had asked for balsamic dressing which THEY DON’T HAVE!)  and another of our party got a baked potato with her sides nowhere to be found. The problem wasn’t only with the order being wrong, but also with the fact it took 10 minutes to get put right. As I rightly predicted, the manager apologized and offered to pay for desserts for the whole table which we gladly accepted. As far as the food goes, I had ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon followed by the steak topped with lobster seafood mix. Both dishes were acceptable, there was a total of 2 tiny claws of lobster on my lobster dish which was a total rip off but all in all the taste was good.

For dessert I had the cheesecake but in retrospect I wish I’d had the creme brulee. I don’t know about you, but for me the Keg gives me the same feeling every time, the food is good, just good enough that you don’t wan’t to complain about the price but once you leave you realize you just got ripped off. I’m not saying the quality is bad, it’s not, but the prices are all about 20% too high.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours Niagara Falls Ontario

This was an amazing outing. About 45 mintues of the best laughs and thrills you can get while getting completely drenched in river water. Make sure that you plan on a warm day because even with the water being 80 degrees it was still chilly for some. The boat is a massive 3 engined 1500 HP beast that can do 360 degree turns and run level 5 rapids like they are nothing. We learned a bit about the area, the falls and the rapids themselves but the highlight is running downstream through the rapids as the boat scoops thousands of gallons of water over you. It was a great adventure, something I would recommend to anyone going to Niagara. It’ s only $60 per person so it’ s well worth the price, just remember a change of clothes!

Copacabana Brazilian Steak House Niagara Falls Ontario (Website down)

There are plenty of bad reviews for this place but we decided to go anyway since the lure of the place is too strong for a meat freak like me. The only real complaint I had is that the idiot woman who seated us complained that we couldn’t have the table instead of the booth since “everything” was reserved. Obviously she was not thrilled to have to work, didn’t care about us or the way she treated us and was basically your typical asshole twenty something stick insect who thinks the world owes her something because she thinks she is hot. Anyway, the place was pretty fun, loud and filled with good looking waiters and waitresses obviously catering to a younger crowd. The process is that you get some sides from the buffet area and wait for the meat guys to come around and cut meat off their giant skewers onto your plate. There are 17 different kinds of meat on offer and I think we tried them all. As long as you don’t expect a quiet restaurant to chat with friends and you don’t mind a fast paced and energetic vibe you should enjoy yourself here. The meat itself was, for the most part, very good. They have encrusted meats, cheese stuffed meats and good quality steaks on offer. The meat was, I have to admit, salty but not to the degree that it was offputting. The cheese stuffed prime rib was fantastic and I had at least 3 servings of bacon wrapped sirloin! I would definitely recommend that you go at least once, it’s very much like being on vacation in a tropical island, it’s loud, the wait staff are sometimes forgetful but always happy and the place itself is like a tiny getaway. I think we would try the one in Toronto to compare experiences but next time I will have to remember to 24 hour fast before hand. It did take me 2 days to get over the amount I ate, but that is a sign that we all had a great time!

Doubletree Hilton Niagara Falls Ontario

We have stayed here before and obviously since we returned we liked it enough! The room this time was a little bizarre and since we had 4 of us in one room utilizing the pull out couch for 2 of us it was a great experience. For the other 2 however, they were sleeping on a pullout that was barely a double and filled the extra room completely. There was only a single bathroom for all of us and the main room had fixed curtains that blocked the corner windows which I found bizarre. Last time was better, I have to admit, but this time was cheaper overall. I think for the future though it would be worth getting separate rooms. We had breakfast in the hotel on Sunday and once again the buffet was well stocked, had an omelette maker at their own station and the food was good quality, hot and well prepared.

R7D45 – Surprise Workout! Suunto Movescount and Firstbeat Athlete

It’s been hot, I know, I keep saying that but last night was so hot they cancelled training at gymnastics. Probably wise, it was a real scorcher! So I was left to ponder what to do, luckily though I have a plan so I pulled up the schedule and got to work. I was scheduled to do 5×4 clean and press but since I have tended to kind of free form my RKC workouts I ended up doing the following:

10 min warmup pumps and halos and KB Squat
3 rungs C&P with pullups
20 2 hand swings
3 rungs C&P with pullups
20 1 hand swings
3 rungs C&P with pullups
20 snatches with rack pulldown (after snatch, bring KB to rack position then down)
20 snatches with arc pulldown (snatch up and straight arm arc back between legs)

Thanks to Suunto I know this was a decent workout, it rated a 3.5 TE and a whopping 44% of time in my VO2 max training zone. Not only that, it was over 40 with the humidity and I was out on the deck since the last RKC workout I did I dented the basement ceiling a little! It was a good workout, and a refreshing change not to be in the gym with the kids making them suffer the heat. I have got hold of the Firstbeat Athlete software and it is some serious data manipulation. Probably far more than I need, but I am loving the complexity of calculations it can do regarding your workout, intensity, energy burn type and duration of different training zones. When I plugged my watch in this morning, it also automatically logged my workout into Movescount.com for me. Sometimes, and I really mean only sometimes, technology surprises me in a good way!

R7D30-35 – Warriors In Sickness And In Health

The week leading up to the Warrior Dash was not great. I coached Wednesday despite having a fever and after spiking over 40 degrees I was off work on Thursday and Friday with only some gentle walking on the treadmill and outside to count as exercise on Friday. My throat was extremely sore, and to me that is a serious issue, but Nicole apparently thought I meant I had a “tickle” in my throat because when she finally saw the white lesions back there she immediately suggested I go to the clinic. It’s been so bad that I can hardly eat, because swallowing anything is like inserting a stick blender into my throat. The clinic doc tells me it’s not Strep but it is a viral infection and it is both contagious and incurable. Great. Despite being weak from fever and feeling like my head is connected to my shoulders by a lit sparkler I wasn’t about to miss the Warrior Dash due to start 930am Saturday. Oh and one more thing that I neglected to mention, I burned the roof of my mouth on Friday so badly that I can’t actually bite into anything because the roof of my mouth HAS NO SKIN LEFT!

Of course I can’t sleep, so by the time 5am rolled around on Saturday I didn’t feel like I had rested at all in preparation for what was billed as “The Craziest Day Of Your Life” by the Warrior Dash peeps. We dropped off the baby and drove up to Horseshoe Resort in Barrie. The fact that this race was set to be hosted at a ski resort should have been my first indicator that it was going to take more than a couple of days running “hills” to train properly for this. It was too late for regret, and I would have to lean on my every day training to get me through. In reality, the course ran up and down ski hills with alarming regularity, and for at least 2 of the ascents we were on black diamonds I am sure (at least it felt, and looked that way). We were all pretty excited to get started, the feeling of the park was not unlike being a soph in university, all of the enjoyment, none of the drunken froshness. The place was flooded with participants even though we were some of the earliest waves to go (I would suggest doing that!) and even as we lined up to drop off our gear, there were plenty of people already finishing, caked in mud with a banana and a huge smile. I have to say that there were all kinds of people participating. It wasn’t just a bunch of crossfit and bootcamp knuckleheads, it was basically the same kind of crowd you would see at a 5 or 10k fun run, most look like they belong, some look lost and some look like they maybe should have thought this through a little better but kudos to everyone for coming out and giving it a shot!

We dropped our gear, took one last drink and headed to the start line and with the crowd buzzing, and cracking jokes it felt lke we were in line for a concert, not about to have our asses handed to us by a mean spirited and ugly 5k of hell. But we were blissfully unaware and as the countdown finally came and the flames leaped from the start gantry we were off! Naturally, the first few hundred yards were a laugh, everybody was talking and having fun, jumping over a small creek thinking that was a measure of what was to come. Funny thing is, there were people trying to get around the little creek not realizing that the first obstacle is knee deep mud from which there is no escape. By the time we got through the mud, there was a definite air of annoyance mixed with frustration and more than a couple of lost shoes. The fun run continued and for me that was the tough part, not being a runner, and also having a lingering malady to carry with me. Nevertheless I carried on with the hills getting steeper and longer (through woods at the start) and the pace being fairly respectable for an old guy! Second came the dark crawl, basically like going through someone’s tent at night, being too drunk to see and crawling out the other end. There were beams inside so you had to stay on your knees and since the ground was mostly gravel and rock it was a wonderfully refreshing experience! With knees smarting and heart screaming we continued on.

More to come…

R7D25-7 – End Of Rest Week. Bring The Pain.

Probably since it was rest week and the pressure to perform was off I managed to do some satisfactory workouts this weekend. Friday I was able to crank out a 30 minute RKC workout with 5 ladders (34543) and some swings, one arm swings, clean and press and some snatches. Not having to worry about the ceiling made a huge difference as did being able to drop the KB if I needed to on the grass. Working out in the outdoors really does rock! Saturday we had poutine again from Larry’s Chip Truck and I have to say they were not as good as the ones I had at RIV the day before. With all those carbs in my system I decided it was best to get somthing done so I did the following:

100 pullups
100 box jumps (24″)
100 Push Ups

In addition to being active all day and out in the fresh air, this made for a perfect weekend from a physical perspective. Sunday was the 5 hour drive back home and that was always going to be the day off!

This week it’s the start of phase 2 of my mashup as follows:

R7D12-15 Happy Father’s Day

As usual, sticking with the plan is the biggest challenge but as I sit here on day 15 having successfully managed to fit working out and coaching into a Monday afternoon I am feeling pretty good. After my Plyo revisit, I finished the week with Shoulders and Arms, followed by  a light cardio workout that was supposed to be Pure Cardio. The issue this week was being away for the weekend in Hastings for Father’s Day, and although I was resolute in my determination to fit the workouts in, I didn’t make it. So, Monday I made sure I put the workout first and managed the following RKC (in short order!).

3 rungs
20 overhead swings
4 rungs
10 snatches
5 rungs

I didn’t have much time but in comparison to the last 2 weeks, this was a success! I am entering my third week and because of the inability to fit all the days in I am considering skipping the rest week since it is really only necessary when you are working out 6 or 7 days a week. Maybe the best thing to do would be to insert a 4th week of what I have been doing instead and try to get the participating days up to at least 5 out of 7. Good news on that front is the reduction for the summer of coaching hours to 2 days instead of 3. Even if I pick up another class or try to do some bootcamp type training, hopefully the time involved will enable me to get something done on that third day.

I am pretty excited about doing P90X and Insanity workouts this week, but I suppose I should get over my hang up with IA and do the vertical plyo workout next week, but either way, I have managed to nail Monday, I am off work tomorrow meaning a day to do whatever I want and then look forward to hitting a 6 days out of 7 week. Woohoo!

R7D5-7 – Week 1 and I feel better already!

It was the cardio part of the week, since I had switched, it was time for Plyometric Cardio Circuit and boy were my calves sore the next day. I have to admit I love the Insanity and P90X combo this time around, I think because I have been doing other things for so long that I have recovered from my Beachbody burnout. Plyometric cardio circuit is tough, I remember from the last time to take the warm up easy as possible for the first round (of 3) and that made a world of difference. I made it through the whole thing, doing everything, which IIRC was not possible the first time I tried. I followed that up with a day of RKC because I had failed at my first couple of days. My RKC workout looks like this:

3×3 ladders
20 one arm swings
20 two arm swings
10 C&P each arm
10 Snatch each arm

Doesn’t sound like a lot and for now it probably isn’t but if you are short on time and looking for a lung buster of a workout, KBs are the way to go.

Enough of the modifications, this week I will strive to do what I am supposed to on the days I am scheduled. I do feel a lot better, but I think I am up a few lbs since BL finished and its time to get back on the slide towards 220! I have to reward myself at 220, it is a huge goal that deserves a reward…

R7D3/4 – Switcheroo

First sub and we are only 4 days in! I decided to do shoulders and arms last night instead of plyo cardio circuit. I guess I just felt like I needed to get the 2 P90X weight days out of the way and leave the 3 cardio days together. Since I am still coaching Fridays I think I may stick with this, but I will try both ways and see what happens. The problem with it is that I will have 4 days of weight and then 3 days cardio which is a big split. If I had left it the way it was then I would only have had 2 days between weight workouts. That’s probably why I did it!!

However, as you all know I am sure, sometimes life gets into your schedule and has to take precedence. The baby has been sick and the hour I see her between work and coaching is not the time to be working out. So I have been doing some workouts at gym with the kids and will bump up that participation if I have to in order to get some chinups and pushups done. The RKC is easy to fit in, it’s short, you can do it with minimal warmup and still get a great workout so that is my go-to workout for coaching days if I can’t get anything else done.

Shoulders and Arms was pretty good, I find that doing varied range and position of curls irritates my elbow so I am having to sub some things out just like I did last round. The other thing is that the tricep stuff still irritates me so I do free dips and skull crusher push ups to help in getting the kind of tricep burn I want. Other than that, it’s a good workout with decent pace and enough variety to cover all the major areas. With the RKC giving me a lot of shoulder work, this is a good supplement too.

21 Days Was Enough. Time For Round 7.

I am surprised and a little disappointed in Insanity Asylum. It was an OK workout but I think that the ladder and the bands made it a little gimmicky, more so than I could tolerate. Sure, agility ladders have a place, but you can’t expect to build a workout around one, especially not when you are aiming at an audience that is comprised of P90X and Insanity grads. It was an OK system, I think if it was the first Beachbody product I had bought it would have held my attention longer but the fact that they provided a p90X and Insanity hybrid says to me that they knew the product wouldn’t stand on it’s own for most people. That said, I will be using a couple of the workouts in my new SuperHybrid workout (that I really need a better name for).

It’s almost Monday, so time for a change. Not only that, my daughter is now into her 1’s having turned 1 this weekend so it’s a great time for things to move to the next level. In fact , speaking of time, it is almost 2 years that I have been posting my progress and workouts here, in 13 days I will move into year 3. It’s amazing how time flies.

So welcome to R7, let’s hope that this time I can make it through to the 90 day line, or at least a healthy percentage thereof. I think with the plan firmly in place as it is and a wide variety of workouts, this may be the one!

This week, brought to you by the number 7.

Monday: RKC 10 minute 25 swings, 5 min TGU, 5 min C&P, 10 snatch
Tuesday: Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X
Wednesday: RKC 10 minute 25 swings, 5 min TGU, 5 min C&P, 10 snatch
Thursday: Plyometric Cardio Circuit
Friday: Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X
Saturday: Pure Cardio
Sunday: FOY Yoga With Tony

By the way, if you want to join in and you have 90 days and a bag full of energy to spare (and the P90X, Insanity and Insanity Asylum videos and a couple of kettlebells) then come along for the ride and let’s see how much pain we can inflict on ourselves in the name of feeling young and strong!!!

P90X, Insanity, Insanity:Asylum, RKC, Insanity:Asylum/P90X Hybrid Schedules

I finally got around to doing this. I have included, on one page, the schedule for P90X Classic, Insanity, Insanity Asylum, Insanity Asylum P90X Hybrid and the RKC Minimum and RKC Rite of Passage (which is 12 weeks total).

I hope to build a true hybrid system from this including some workouts from each discipline, however this leaves no time for Crossfit type movements including Olympic lifting, wallball, running, sprints etc. However, there are plenty of rest days in there that I can do a quick WOD style workout with deadlifts, clean and jerk etc if I feel the need.

I wasn’t able to find this table or anything even close to it on the internet anywhere so I hope it will come in useful for people searching for a comparison chart of the schedules.

I have tried many times to find a way to get it to display here in the blog but it appears like it just won’t cooperate.

So, you will have to view it HERE!

If you want to stick around here I have cut and pasted the schedules below, it’s not pretty, I am not proud to do it this way but I figure you can format it yourself, I already did all the hard work for you! 🙂
